How the program is actually delivered to you is usually ignored by most students. How many stages do they break the program into? And in what sequence and what control do you have at what pace it arrives? Most companies will sell you some sort of program spread over 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you finish each section. Sounds reasonable? Well consider these facts: Maybe the order of study pushed by the company's salespeople doesn't suit all of us. You may find it a stretch to finalise all the elements within the time limits imposed?

The ideal solution is to have all the training materials sent to you right at the start; the entire package! Then, nothing can hinder your capability of finishing.

What is the reason why traditional academic studies are now falling behind more commercial certificates? The IT sector is now aware that to learn the appropriate commercial skills, proper accreditation from such organisations as Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe is far more effective and specialised - for much less time and money. This is done by honing in on the actual skills required (along with a proportionate degree of associated knowledge,) as opposed to covering masses of the background detail and 'fluff' that academic courses can often find themselves doing - to fill a three or four year course.

Imagine if you were an employer - and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What should you do: Trawl through a mass of different academic qualifications from several applicants, asking for course details and what workplace skills they have, or pick out specific commercial accreditations that exactly fulfil your criteria, and draw up from that who you want to speak to. Your interviews are then about personal suitability - instead of long discussions on technical suitability.

The key tools employed by web site designers are their design environments, with Adobe Creative Suite (presently in version 4 as of '09/10) staying essentially the most popular commercially. Consequently though you are laying graphic-blocks & adding text, in the background, Dreamweaver is converting this in to code. A thorough understanding of these types of languages is essential if you're to be a commercially-viable website designer.

So many training providers are all about the certification, and completely miss the reasons for getting there - which is of course employment. Your focus should start with the final destination in mind - don't get hung-up on the training vehicle. Students often train for a single year but end up performing the job-role for decades. Don't make the mistake of finding what seems like a very 'interesting' program and then spend decades in a job you don't like!

Get to grips with what you want to earn and the level of your ambition. This can often control which precise qualifications will be required and how much effort you'll have to give in return. Your likely to need help from an experienced person who can best explain the market you're considering, and who can offer 'A typical day in the life of' synopsis for each job considered. All of these things are of paramount importance as you'll need to fully understand if you're going down the right road.
